Abstract
Cable damage has a bad influence on the safety and serviceability of cable stayed bridge. Three parameters including the damage extent δ, the damage intensity η and the damage position α are introduced to depict the cable damage, various typical global cable damage cases are calculated with finite element method. The results show that the whole structure behavior is liner when the damage is small both in the single cable damage cases and the multi-cable damage cases. Furthermore, unlike the homogeneous damage case, the local damage has little influence on the variation of the cable force even for the relatively large cable damage, so it can not be detected by vibration method easily. The local damage case must be paid much attention in the daily inspection on bridge.
