Abstract :
Document design is a difficult task, especially when the writer is faced with a potentially hostile audience. A narrative approach to design addresses questions of audience, motivation, and tasks. Using reader-response theory and the dramaturgical approach of K. Burke (1945; 1950; 1989; 1970), writers can construct a series of narrative arcs on which to base their documents
