Abstract :
A new modulation technique that uses four orthonormal basis functions is proposed. Using four orthonormal basis functions provides an advantage over most traditional modulation techniques such as quadrature phase shift keying and quadrature amplitude modulation that only possess two degrees of freedom. Hyper phase shift keying offers an increase in error performance over these modulation techniques for the same energy per bit to noise power spectral density ratio. As a result, hyper phase shift keying offers a novel way to improve communications using easy to generate waveforms. First, traditional modulation techniques are reviewed and then the hyper phase shift keying modulation technique is introduced. Finally, the different techniques are compared in terms of probability of bit error and bandwidth efficiency.
