Abstract :
This paper addresses a problem of ranking of substations in a bulk electric power system. The ranking criteria utilize information on the past station performance. The paper first reviews the station characteristic measures introduced in the literature. They include reliability, security and safety. These measures are computed through the analysis of outage data for the stations of interest. No special computer tools are needed to evaluate relevant indices. The next step involves using the above measures to produce a single list which ranks the substations. For this purpose, a multicriteria optimization technique using a pairwise comparison approach is applied. Following ranking of the substations, the next step is to produce a list of the most important components at a given station. A method based on sensitivity analysis is used to for this purpose. A numerical example illustrates the procedures discussed in the paper.
