Abstract :
The advent of the integrated-services digital network (ISDN) has opened up new methods of speech, text, image, and data communication in public and private networks. Key to the evolution of the ISDN is the worldwide standardization of interfaces and protocols by the International Telegraph and Telephone Consultative Committee and the availability of cost-effective integrated circuits (ICs) covering all system needs. Due to the expected market growth, several IC manufacturers offer such devices, and other companies have announced early offerings. Strong coalitions have been established to achieve an important market position. The author reflects on the present situation and discusses future directions
