Abstract
The analysis provided in the paper shows that a station attempting to transmit according to the persistent or non-persistent CSMA scheme participates in a collision with the probability which is upper bounded. These results are opposite to intuitive expectation that the likelihood that a particular station is involved in collision grows to one under high contention. Estimation of upper bounds on collision probability is important for scaling collision avoidance mechanisms and for modeling performance of heterogeneous non-persistent and persistent CSMA systems.
