Abstract
Lasing characteristics of resonance modes were investigated in square, hexagon, hollow square, and hollow hexagonal cavities made on an epi-wafer. In hollow polygonal semiconductor cavities, guided modes were observed in which the modes were formed by total reflections of light at both (outer and inner) boundaries. The cavity loss of guided modes in a hollow hexagonal cavity was found to be considerably reduced compared to that in a hollow square cavity.
