Abstract :
Applying parallelism to each hardware circuit and each software program can decrease its response time and increase its performance. Parallel realization of MP3 yields higher performance of the codec block and this issue is important especially when real time encoding and decoding is considered. This paper focuses on the alias reduction component of the MP3 decoder. MP3 is chosen as a case study since it is the most popular format for compressing and streaming audio. Different methods for parallelizing the alias reduction are proposed and discussed. These methods are divided into inter-frame and intra-frame parallelism categories. Each method is simulated using the MPI (message passing interface) library and is run on several parallel hosts. Our experimental results compare these methods and the best method is introduced.
