Abstract
Holey fibers of “photonic crystal” or “coaxial” type have become a subject of active research. They promise to improve performance of transport networks, reducing nonlinear optical effects and extending usable frequency range (little or no glass in the core) and offering high bend resistance (strong guiding). Holey fibers with performance required in telecom networks have yet to be made, but their possible use deserves attention. The paper deals with issues related to the application of such fibers in telecommunication networks: cabling, splicing, hardware design, operating life etc. Considering cost issues, the most promising designs feature circular symmetry and single central cavity with dielectric mirror inside, because standard fiber drawing techniques may be adopted to make them. For the same reason use of silica-based materials is assumed
