Summary form only given, as follows. Neurocomputing principles are being increasingly applied to the task of pattern recognition. This study analyzes the mechanics of pattern recognition by a self-learning layered neural network in terms of the classical principles of pattern recognition. The authors also report on a simulation-based study and analysis of the performance of a layered neural network when applied to the task of character recognition.<>
