This paper reviews the history of modern town planning in Hong Kong during 1945-1997. Hong Kong revived the urban construction after World War II and implemented the town planning under the colonial policy before she came back to Mainland China. In this period, the town planning system had been set up, the town planning legal basis had been laid down and the town planning authority had been organized to work on a series of town planning activities. The historical phases can be sorted out by indicating and analyzing the significant town planning events such as the clearance of slums and public housing, the planning and construction of new town in New Territories, the urban renewal programmes in old urban areas, the seafront reclamation, the airport and ports planning, etc. Then the characteristics of modern town planning in Hong Kong can be inferred.
