Abstract
The performance of directive and omnidirectional handset antennas is measured in indoor and suburban outdoor environments at 2.15 GHz. The antennas are studied in free space and beside a phantom head with radiation pattern measurements and radio channel measurements. The results suggest that directive antennas are less affected by the head and give better performance than omnidirectional antennas. Also the diversity gain of two diversity arrangements is assessed and a diversity gain of about 4 dB is obtained with selection combining.
