Abstract
Cost effective ASICs should be designed for easy integration at system level, and with the possibility of being part of a range of products, targeted at different markets. In this contribution, a personal computer (PC) extension board that implements, in hardware, a spell environment for any natural language is presented. The PC board design is based upon the use of an ASIC, a searching processor that allows the searching of a binary word at each clock cycle, therefore making the process of finding a given word much faster than when a software package is used. The domains of application of this board can easily be extended to include translation among different languages, and to other domains than those related with text processing. In fact, work is already being done in the area of health care and medical terms standardization
