  • Abstract
Helical intake port is one of the important main parts in diesel engine, which has a decisive effect on performance, such as mixture formation and combustion, charge replacement and so on. This paper presents the general procedure by using reverse engineering (RE) to redesign helical inlet port of diesel. Coordinate measuring machine(CMM)was used to measure geometrical surfaces of inlet port to produce point clouds, then the point clouds were completely integrated into a three dimensional surface by Imageware, which is a specialized software in RE field. The errors between the reconstructed 3-D model and the original point clouds are measured and the maximum error is less than 0.5mm. Finally, the enclosed surface can be transferred to a generally commercial CAD/CAM.
