Abstract
A benchmark for a future generation of terrestrial optical fiber systems is about 1 Tb/s with bit rate-distance products of about 2000 Tb-km/s. This paper reviews research at Corning to define the properties of transport fibers that allow systems to meet this performance benchmark, while at the same time being manufacturable in the volumes required for terrestrial needs
