Abstract
Summary form only given. The details of 3-dimensional mode confinement within a dielectrically apertured Fabry-Perot microcavity will be discussed. We examine the confinement effects on mode loss, spontaneous lifetime changes, and low threshold lasing. Comparisons with experiment will also be made, and which show the importance of high contrast cavities based on selective oxidation
