Abstract
The modernization of a plant´s medium voltage distribution system to accommodate new and existing loads is discussed. Among the various problems solved was that of providing power for continuous process operation during the utility company´s concurrent upgrade of the purchase power facilities. How this was accomplished by means of a technique called `standing on one leg´ is described. Also addressed are the steps taken to elicit management support for the modernization and the life cycle considerations for the distribution scheme that was chosen. Safety precautions taken during construction and installation are reviewed
