Abstract :
The results of the performance evaluation of an improved medium access control (MAC) protocol for hybrid fibre coax (HFC) access networks are presented. The protocol provides quality of service (QoS) for asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) as well as for Internet protocol (IP) services. A dynamic, centralized control scheme based on polling is used to accommodate ATM traffic on multiple shared upstream channels of the HFC network. Different aspects of the guaranteed access MAC protocol are investigated by simulation. An improved polling slot distribution scheme is proposed and evaluated. It provides shorter bandwidth reservation delays than static polling
