Abstract :
In this paper we try to assess some of the computational aspects and the performance of nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) if efficient NMPC schemes that also show good overall performance (such as quasi-infinite horizon NMPC) and tailored dynamic optimization strategies are used. After an outline of the efficient solution and formulation of the NMPC problem we consider the control of a high purity distillation column. Simulation examples and experimental results underpin that a practical application of NMPC is computationally feasible even nowadays and does lead to increased performance in comparison to existing control strategies.
