Abstract
Central to lossy compression is the use of a suitable distortion measure. This paper develops appropriate criteria for a remote sensing distortion measure and discusses suitable measures. One measure (the percentage maximum absolute distortion (PMAD) measure) is demonstrated to be suitable for application to remotely sensed images. Using this measure, we can achieve a seventeen fold compression without appreciable loss in classification accuracy
