Abstract
Many generations of engineers have used slide rules as effective problem solving tools. Computers have made slide rules obsolete. The paper introduces course design criteria that will help to construct a course that brings back the spirit of a slide rule in electronic form. This course is intended to replace the largely ineffective “problem solving by computers” courses that today are still based on the syntax of one large programming language such as C or Ada
