Abstract :
We measure the difference in packet spacing of voice packets at the receiver compared to that at the sender. The difference, interarrival jitter is used as a measure of the quality for real-time voice applications. Our focus is on comparison of Internet protocol (IP) store and forward and IP switching, a new technology with the purpose of speeding routing. For reference we also compare the difference to overall delay characteristics. We find out that the difference is small compared to end-to end delay and to sampling time and comparable to network delay. We show that, with the interarrival difference measure, IP switching is better suited for real-time traffic than conventional routing
