Abstract :
We are just at the beginning of an exciting yet challenging future, where telecommunications, local area networking, computing and broadcasting will come together to provide new services for both businesses and residential consumers. The topics highlighted are just some of the issues we will need to get to grips with. The list is slightly computing centric but all are at least recognised, and many are being tackled in research laboratories, consortia and standards bodies across the industry. Much of the work in developing broadband standards such as ATM has been based on the traditional signalling paradigm for telephony. The issues of connection management, ATM traffic control, device mediation, services and user profiles, and corporate interconnect are addressed
