Abstract
The paper focuses on the design of a third Generation (3G) wireless network employing traffic concentrators over the transport segment of the network. Thanks to their capability to achieve traffic multiplexing gains, traffic concentrators provide considerable operational savings by reducing the number of transmissions links required at the base station transceivers. This is particularly beneficial to Service Providers needing to lease transport links. This paper addresses potential network topologies with access concentrators and discusses benefits achieved by intelligently introducing traffic concentrators within the architecture of a 3G wireless network. It also presents a case study for a UMTS network.
