Abstract
Phase-conjugation characteristics of a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) are investigated experimentally. We find that the carrier-density modulation inside the SOA distorts the phase-conjugated signal. Such distortion can be suppressed by raising the pump power and lowering the signal power. The lower limit of the signal power is, however, determined by the required signal-to-noise ratio of the phase-conjugated signal.
