Abstract
Summary form only given, as follows. With the rapid worldwide growth in demand for transmission capacity, scientists and engineers are now addressing the practical challenges of optimal amplifier design for wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) lightwave communication systems and comment on the manner in which system requirements will influence future amplifier design. Recent theoretical and experimental work on multiwavelength performance of erbium-doped fluoride amplifiers is presented.
