  • Abstract
After a study of the surface wave characteristics of the shear-horizontal (SH) surface waves guided by the interface of a thin layer and a semi-infinite substrate, a new existence condition for SH surface waves propagating in a layered structure is presented. The analysis shows that the SH surface wave discussed is a new type wave, because its existence condition, dispersion characteristics, and the space distribution of its displacement and electric potential are different from those of the Love-type wave. This new SH surface wave can be excited by the usual interdigital transducers at the interface, and surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices could be made without a package
