Abstract :
Distributed and multiplexed sensing schemes have been studied and developed, recently, in the field of fiber sensor technologies. In the systems, a long length fiber acts as a ldquonerverdquo for feeling strain and/or temperature distribution along the fiber. Performances of the artificial nerve systems have markedly improved within the last couple of years, in spatial resolution and measurement speed. By embedding the ldquofiber-optic nerve systemrdquo in bridges, tall buildings and aircraft wings, these materials and structures can sense damage to prevent disasters.
