Abstract
The application of acoustical Doppler current profiler (ADCP) data for describing the turbulent diffusion in the sea is presented. The data on the currents and other hydrological parameters were obtained by ADCPs and by a set of high-resolution hydrophysical probes in the eastern Gulf of Finland. The two methods of measurements used were data collection from the maneuvering ship and data collection during anchored stations. The obtained data sets were evaluated by statistical methods. The horizontal and vertical scales of the turbulent disturbances and the diffusion coefficients were calculated. The results of analysis demonstrate the strong spatial variability of these parameters in the investigated area. The key parameters of the vertical turbulent transfer, diffusion coefficients, turbulent fluctuations scales, and heat fluxes are strongly variable with depth. In particular the heat fluxes change direction on some occasions
