Abstract
This paper presents a case study of eleven telecommunication products from a Design for Environment (DfE) perspective of an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). From a life-cycle perspective, five environmental parameters have been determined, which determine the performance of a product. Application of these parameters represents DfE, shows the linkage to the supply chain and the possibilities and limitations. This paper shows how the relative Environmental Performance Product Indicator (EPPI) can operate in a business environment. Based on this indicator, products can be benchmarked and improvements can be made visible for designers, product and sales managers and the customer. The use of EPPI is evaluated and discussed in the scope of the European Directives EEE (Impact on Environment of Electric and Electronic Equipment), EER (Energy Efficient Requirements) and standardization.
