Abstract :
This paper presents the requirements and constraints for islanding and island operation of industrial sites. Especially the transition from grid connected operation to island operation at decoupling due to an external fault sets a challenging task. Based on system studies of islanding and island operation at large industrial plants of chemical and process industries the performance and characteristic of the industrial network supplied by gas turbines are described. However, the same procedure and constraints apply for other types of power plants. Methodology and planning criteria are described to design reliable island operation of industrial networks. Specific requirements are explained and defined considering the load characteristic of these industrial sites, such as induction machines, converter drives and fluctuating loads. The criteria and parameters are defined based on the example network. Specific island operation control schemes are analyzed and described in order to meet the defined planning and operational criteria. The impact of control schemes are explained and verified by dynamic network simulations.
