A construction of an intelligent environmental language learning system with interactive 3D quasi environment

This paper describes the construction of an intelligent environmental language learning system, which is equipped with a three-dimensional quasi space as a learning environment. Although there are a number of CAI systems for language learning, often the methodologies which they apply are simple replacement for text based techniques to other media techniques. Our system based on the architecture of an environmental ICAI system, enhances communication acquisition. The architecture is based on considerations of human communication processes with utterances, which is performed with verbal and nonverbal media information. The domain of the system is easy level English and Japanese conversation concerned with objects which are placed in a quasi environment. The system has two modes for quasi space authoring and learning. In authoring mode, an author can implement knowledge bases which contain three dimensional information for presentations of certain situations on the authoring interfaces. In learning mode, the system can present various situations to learners, and a learner can discuss the situation under the guide of learning strategies. The system works on Macintosh personal computers. The quasi space is implemented with QuickDraw3D which can be used on personal computers
