Abstract :
A number of axial flow ventricular assist devices (VAD) are currently undergoing large animal trials prior to clinical evaluation. The potential for shear activation of platelets by these turbine containing devices is of concern. In this study increases in platelet activation and consumption were demonstrated and quantified in response to increased shear stress levels within an experimental VAD
