Abstract
A new bistatic HF auroral radar system (Collaborative UK Twin Located Auroral Sounding System: CUTLASS) has been constructed and deployed at sites in Finland and Iceland. The radar has a viewing area of 3×106 km2, approximately the size of Western Europe, and can achieve a spatial resolution of about 50×50 km. The radars are located so that observations can be made both in the auroral zone ionosphere and also well into the polar cap region. The fields of view cover the highly instrumented area of Northern Scandinavia, including the fields of view of the incoherent scatter radars EISCAT and ESR
