Abstract
In this paper, the motivation is outlined for stacking piezocomposite transducer elements mechanically in series and electrically in parallel for sonar, biomedical and high power transmission applications. Results from studies of low frequency, single element transducers are presented. Manufacturing techniques suitable for prototype production are outlined and two sets of prototype transducers are described. These allow comparison of stacks with different numbers of layers both with each other and with theoretical results. The suitability of 2D and 3D finite element analysis and linear systems modelling are discussed. It is concluded that practical piezocomposite stacks should realise their theoretical benefits after further development of the fabrication processes
