Abstract
This paper provides guidelines for the choice of a particular nonlinear blind equalizer applied for satellite communications, when the major design criterion is the robustness of the equalizer transient performance with respect to parameter initialization before the beginning of the learning period. It is pointed out that such a criterion plays a key role for assuring the efficient long-term operation of the system, since the spatial environment influences the equalizer circuits in a particular way. A new method for evaluating the influence of parameter initialization on the transient performance of nonlinear equalizers is proposed, which provides the foundation for a comparative simulation study involving several nonlinear structures.
