Abstract :
In this paper, the effect of the hard and soft handoff on the reverse link capacity for a CDMA Manhattan like microcellular system is evaluated. We obtain analytical expressions for the relative other-cell interference factor as a function of the breakpoint, the cell radio, the variance of the random variation and the propagation path loss exponents for both hard and soft handoff. It is shown that the capacity is an increasing function of the breakpoint distance to the cell radio ratio and that the capacity increase because of the soft handoff process is a function of the breakpoint to the cell radio ratio. The highest capacity is obtained for breakpoint distances smaller than 0.7 the cell radio. On the other hand, the lowest capacity increase because of the use of soft handoff (over hard handoff) is obtained for breakpoint distances smaller than 0.7 the cell radio
