Abstract :
In December of 1986, a microVAX computing system was installed aboard the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) Research Vessel Columbus Iselin. Several aspects of the installation are presented, including design approach, reliability, personal computer networking, file serving, personal computers as interfaces, instruments interfacing, and low cost disk sharing. After almost two years of operation, with virtually no incidents of failure, reliability has exceeded expectations. The modular approach has allowed an upgrade from a MicroVAX II to a MicroVAX III with no additional capital outlay
