  • Abstract
We have developed a finite element model to describe the thermal interaction between tissue and a high temperature material with defined properties. The model solves the thermal diffusion equation in both the tissue and the material to determine the transient temperature gradients that develop. The tissue response is dependent on both the temperature and thermal inertia of the contacting material. The transient temperature solution, obtained from the thermal analysis, is input to a damage model to calculate a quantitative value for injury as a function of time of exposure and depth into the tissue
