  • Abstract
Undersea systems based on lightwave technology have been in use for 10 years. Over this first decade the transmission capacity per fiber has increased 100 fold. With the introduction of the erbium-doped fiber-amplifier and wavelength division multiplexing technology, this growth characteristic will continue well into the 21 st century
