Abstract :
The statistical behaviour of variable-bit-rate (VBR) video sources in an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) is studied. Different models have been suggested for modelling the video source rate generated by the VBR video coders. We implemented three source models to generate the bits per frame, using the real data statistics. These models are verified to assure the quality of their predictions for network performance and the quality of service (QoS). The difficulties in verifying these models is also discussed in the paper. We used two real video sequences, one is a videoconference and another is a full motion video sequence. The models are verified by analysing their statistical behaviour and are used to simulate the sixteen input ATM multiplexer switch. The study observed the cell loss resulting from buffer overflow, at different buffer sizes, for models and real data
