Abstract :
This paper considers the use of GSM as an access technology for wireless local loop (WLL) applications. Two types of terminals were investigated: a standard GSM mobile station (MS) with limited mobility and a fixed MS using a roof-mounted directional antenna. The characteristics of these types of terminals make it possible to improve on the network configuration, implying a potential gain in traffic capacity. The goal of the paper is to find the capacity limit of a GSM WLL network and the discussion is based on simulation results obtained with a network simulation tool. Topics such as power control, frequency reuse, multi-layer cell structures and increased sectorization at the base station are be considered. The results show a capacity gain of up to a factor 2.5 compared to a standard GSM mobile network
