Abstract
Summary form only given. In the Faculty of Engineering at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium) "electronic tutoring" for undergraduate students was introduced in 1996. One of the pioneer projects involved the courses on "Introduction to Engineering Mechanics" in the first two years of the curriculum (about 400 resp. 300 students). The project was called STEM (Student Tutoring by Electronic Means) and is basically a compilation of Web-pages. Connected to the university network (KULeuvenNet) students may find at any time and from any place electronic support for these courses. The success of this project strongly relies upon the effort by the educational staff to continuously stimulate the students in lectures, in exercise sessions, in exam preparations and feedback, etc. to make use of the tremendous possibilities of Web-based learning.
