Red flower mutant line in Impatiens balsamina sp4 generation was developed from mutation plant by spaceflight. The differences of genomic DNA traits and content of flavonoids between mutant line with red flower color in SP4 generation Impatiens balsamina and its parent line (the ground control, CK) were investigated by using amplified inter simple sequence repeats (ISSR) markers and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results showed that 12 ISSR primers produced different gene bands within used 25 single primers. A total of 83 markers were displayed in which polymorphic bands were up to 28 and polymorphic rate was 33.73%. The contents of quercetin and kaempferol in the petals of mutant line with red flower in SP4 generation were 1.58, 1.97 times higher than those of CK respectively. These results indicate that spaceflight can induce the variation of genomic DNA and secondary metabolite, and certify that space mutation is an effective and feasible method for breeding of Impatiens balsamina L.
