Abstract
In this paper, the concept of filtering as a tool for substation design is introduced and integrated into the knowledge-based system already existing for this purpose. The filtering process is based on rules, both heuristic and self-evident, which have been formulated to reflect the requisites and constraints that define the design environment. These rules search the database of substation components to choose objects likely to satisfy the input data (the specifications). These objects are then assembled in the form of feasible substation configurations and retained for further economic and technical analysis and evaluation so as to arrive at a recommended design.
