Abstract :
The design of a simple, rugged digital communication system for AC adjustable-frequency drives is presented. The system is composed of a microprocessor-based local controller circuit located at the drive controller proper and an RS-422 connection to a programmable logic controller. The microprocessor-based system features remote control, status monitoring, and network capability. A natural outgrowth of the microprocessor implementation is the ability to perform distributed closed-loop control functions at the drive controller. This ability allows the use of high-level commands, which reduces the work load of the programmable logic controller
