Abstract
After a short introduction on the general concept and objectives of the European Union ACTS program, a more in-depth overview and analysis of the work carried out in the photonic technologies domain will be presented. The ACTS (advanced communications technologies and services) program was defined by the European Council in July 1994 in order to support European policies for early deployment and effective use of advanced optical communications in consolidation of the internal market, and to enable European industry to compete effectively in global markets
