Abstract :
Summary form only given. This review will introduce the basic processes involved in the interference of the data signal with crosstalk terms, bringing out the interplay between the optical bandwidth of the source and the electronic bandwidth of the receiver. The models used routinely to treat the detrimental effect of beat noise, relying heavily on the noise statistics of the sources both for single and multiple interferers, will be presented. Specific network and subsystem architectures plagued by interferometric noise will be described and limits to the crosstalk levels that can be tolerated for acceptable performance given. Techniques that are candidates with which to combat beat noise will be summarized. Finally, conclusions will be drawn and outstanding issues that require further consideration will be highlighted
