Next generation technology move for GSM operators of Pakistan

The three driving forces for the Internet savvy generation are broadband, wireless and mobility. Currently, WiMAX combines the first two attributes while 3G supports first and last effectively. This paper discusses the next generation technology move for the 2G-GSM operators of Pakistan. It provides technical and business justification why 3G alone or WiMAX alone will not be a winning strategy for an operator. It also presents the broadband users´ forecasts that further strengthen this claim. Thus, we suggest a mix solution and recommend WiMAX for fixed broadband services while 3G for voice and low bandwidth requiring data (fixed and mobile).
