Title :
Using technical specifications for water cooled generator stator rewinds
Author :
Serafin, Joel D.
Abstract :
A large number of generators with water cooled stator windings were placed in service in the 1970s. After achieving 25 to 30 years of service, many utilities are entering the market for rewinds. The development of meaningful technical specifications is necessary to set standards for potential bidders. In addition, a clearly defined scope of work within the specification can eliminate surprises and disputes once a bidder has been selected and the work has begun. Finally, technical surveillance by a representative of the utility can be very important as the contractors move to meet competitive demands by reducing the duration and cost of rewinds. This paper reviews Southern Company´s experience in developing and implementing technical specifications for use during recent stator rewinds
